I can barely tell one actress from another: Naseeruddin Shah

I can barely tell one actress from another: Naseeruddin Shah

The versatile actor talks about why acting in films is a 'soul-destroying' job and taking carpentry lessons at the age of 62

It's surprising that Naseeruddin Shah's sounds fed up of the Hindi film industry considering the fact that he's one of the most accomplished actors in the country. As of now, he is back to his first love: theatre.

Over the past weekend, he narrated short stories at the recently concluded literary festival in the city along with younger son Vivaan on the stage. In a candid chat backstage, Naseer saab shares his thoughts on cinema, his favourite actors and more...

Is it true that you've quit acting for good?
Quitting is not the correct word. What would I do with myself if I don't act for a living? Just that I'm a bit fatigued working in front of the camera. It's a very soul- destroying job. Besides, if it weren't for the money and fame, nobody on earth would do it. At the moment, I'm enjoying theatre far more.

And what else is going on other than theatre?
I'm busy learning new stuff. Once you hit 60, you've got to try out newer things to stave off Alzheimer's. So I'm also learning Urdu - I know how to speak but I'm learning how to read and write as well - along with carpentry!

Will you get back to directing films?
No. I'm not cut out for that. I tried it once with Yun Hota To Kya Hota but I failed miserably. Moreover, I couldn't assert myself as a filmmaker. Perhaps I took it way too cavalierly. Fortunately, I realised that the attitude I have towards acting will not necessarily work with directing.

Would you call yourself media-shy?
I find giving interviews very boring because you're expected to talk about yourself and to me that's not the most interesting subject. I instead love talking about acting just like the media loves asking you how you feel - whether someone has died or someone is getting married. They just want to know how you feel!

Your film Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro re-released recently. Are you fond of remakes?
No, not at all. They are remaking some films that shouldn't have been made in the first place. Take Agneepath, for example. It's a piece of crap that could have been easily avoided.

Finally, the actors you like...
I feel Irrfan, Manoj Bajpai and Arshad Warsi are the three finest actors. Boman (Irani) is great too. Among the younger lot, I think Ranbir is promising. He seems like he knows what he's doing. Among the girls, I'm afraid I can barely tell one from the other.

Man accused of raping Spanish national is a history-sheeter; gained access to Bandra house by climbing a sewage pipe

On the day a 27-year-old Spanish national was robbed and raped in her Bandra home by a man who gained access climbing a sewage pipe, Bandra police detained a 30-year-old man under suspicion, who was also involved in the break-in at actor Dino Morea's residence.

According to the police, the accused has been identified as Mohammad Badshah alias Mohammad Ismail Ansari, who lives at Reay Road and has committed over 30 break-ins and robberies, particularly in the Bandra, Khar and Byculla areas.

`The victim identified her assailant through photographs, which closely resembled the suspect. Scratches have also been found on his forearms and back but he has not yet confessed to the crime. We are trying to recover the stolen goods along with medical, forensic and circumstantial evidence in the case,` said an officer on condition of anonymity.

`Ansari, being a habitual housebreaker, was detained as soon as the crime was reported,` said an officer. Ansari had earlier broken into Dino Morea's house on October 26 using the same modus operandi. Police found the footprints of the accused in the victim's apartment, but are yet to recover the knife he used to threaten her.

The accused will be produced in court tomorrow, after which the police will acquire his custody for conducting an identification parade. The victim will be leaving the city within four to five days.

Raped and robbed
Ansari had initially attempted two thefts at a neighbouring bungalow and at a residence in the same area, making off with Rs 5,000 and a mobile phone from the latter. After that, he entered the Perridot building and climbed up a sewage pipe onto the third floor where the victim was residing.

The culprit entered the victim's house by opening the drawing room window, which had no grills. He first searched the house looking for gold and cash. When he found nothing more than a mobile phone, a video camera and Rs 1,000, he lit a cigarette containing charas. He then entered the bedroom and found the woman sleeping alone. Hearing footsteps, she woke up.

With the motive of raping the woman, Ansari went into the kitchen and grabbed a knife. He then threatened her and raped her twice. After raping the victim, Ansari smoked another cigarette with charas.

While he smoked, the victim ran towards the main door to call for help but before she could open the door, Ansari caught her and dragged her inside, raping her again. .

`Ab tujhe dekhta hoon (I will see you),` was what the accused told the victim, who does understand Hindi. Fearing for her life, she ran to the bathroom and locked the door while Ansari was putting on his clothes. When he started knocking on the door, she began screaming through the bathroom window, following which the accused escaped from the apartment. The entire incident occurred in a span of 45 minutes.

'He steals to feed family'

Mohammed Ansari (30), a native of Uttar Pradesh, stays in Reay Road and has been married twice. His second marriage was days before he broke into Dino Morea's residence. An alcoholic and drug addict, he lives with his wife and mother. The Bandra police detained him on suspicion at 11 am on Monday, hours after they rescued the victim from her building.

Police officers who have arrested him in the past said that once Ansari is arrested, he immediately confesses to the crime and surrenders all the stolen booty.

Ansari's mother on the other hand, told the police that her son is not educated and has nothing else to do except commit thefts to feed them. Police officers said that Ansari, who was arrested for the first time in 2007 and has been committing thefts since 2006 does not return home for days and keeps roaming the posh localities of Bandra and Khar looking for possible targets.
